MotionPro Trail Multi Tool – How good and useful?

I think it is about time for me to drop my two cents about this tool because I had it for a fair few years now, and so far, It was a good base for any small tool kit. In fact, most of the times that was all I needed, or if I needed anything else, it easily fitted in the same pouch…

Personally, I think Motion Pro did really good job figuring out the most used tools for most of the bikes and I think that was the part that made their trail multi tool so popular. It is all great, well made and very usable, however, like most tool kits, it has few things that really makes no sense…

7/16th bit…come on Motion Pro, where we are supposed to use it? Harley is the only bike that is using imperial stuff…

Bottle opener also a bit useless and promotes wrong things I suppose… Glass CocaCola bottles aren’t that popular anymore, and drinking beer, while fixing bike broken on the trail… yeah, I don’t know about that… And those who are into drinking beer, hopefully in the end of the riding day, well we don’t really need a bottle opener for that – im sure most of us can open it by other means!

The good bits are, and very useful, that it comes with 1/4 drive and 3/8 drive it can be “assembled” to give a bit of the leverage, and that means you can stick whatever socket you want. You won’t have enough grip to undo your axle bolts with it, but anything else – just about!

In a way it made end with 12mm and especially 10mm a bit useless though… In fact in the whole time I had mine, I have never used them because those bits are a bit useless anyway (or at least I don’t know how to use them!)

What I used the most on mine, probably the Allen key bit and Philips Screw driver… Flat one not so much, as most bikes don’t use any of the flat screws… with the exception to brake and clutch lever bolts, valve tappets and perhaps carb stop screws… but I doubt anyone would jump in that quickly to open up their bikes head on the trail to adjust valves or carbs… and brake/clutch lever pivot bolts could be tightened up… well with pretty much anything anyway (even a coin perhaps?)…

So yeah, it’s a great little tool, packs small, and even smaller if packed with a bit thought put into it, and a pouch it comes with has plenty of room to fit few extra bits!

What comes in the kit:

  1. 1/4 drive,
  2. 3/8 Drive,
  3. 8mm Socket / slot for:
  4. 5 and 6mm Allen keys,
  5. No 2 and 3 Philips screw drivers and
  6. Small and medium Flat screwdrivers.
  7. 14mm socket,
  8. 12mm socket,
  9. 10mm very limited usability “spanner”,
  10. Open ended 10mm “spanner” again, limited usability,
  11. 7/16 open ended for whatever reason and
  12. Bottle opener,
  13. I believe it comes with a 1/4 drive socket (not sure of the size),
  14. And carry pouch.

Talking about the price… It’s not cheap for what it is, and the only reason I got mine was because I got it at the discounted price, but lately when I checked how much are they, I’m thinking… It all depends if someone could make their own kit any cheaper, smaller or at least a little bit more useful (without Harley sizes you know…)? And the answer to that is.. Possibly, but unlikely I would say!
