Honest AJP PR7 Owners Review – The Good, The Bad, The Ugly.

If you are thinking of getting one of these magical unicorns – read this first, because let me tell you straight away, I will not try to make this review negative nor positive, in fact I’ll do my best to leave it as neutral as I can for one main purpose – to let you decide if AJP PR7 is the right adventure motorcycle for you.

Let me be clear here, I have owned a PR7 for over a year or so, I am not a world traveller so I have not covered tens of thousands of miles – only 6k miles  and all of them riding trails, to and back. It was a 2020 model and one of the last with Old-school Delphi ECU. Golden Sachs forks and an old Samsung tablet.

Ajp Pr7 Forks

Had to mention these things because previous models had some problems with some of the components, and the main concern was forks. Some of the forks with older red coating started to peel off inside of the forks causing troubles but that was completely not AJP’s fault though, as they dont make forks and that could have happened to any other bike, it was just PR7 that was the unlucky at that time that got the faulty batch from Sachs – all of them were sorted with no fuss too (or had to be sorted, if owners gave a damn about it).

AJP Pr7 Ecu

Ecu gets another blame for another spectrum of “problems” as few will say its a bit twitchy / snatchy. The thing is that the Original Delphi ECU is not very precise in reading the sensors and so it can’t deliver the right amount of fuel for the right RPM, and so the end user gets the engine that feels a bit like a donkey at low rpm and a bit like a rocket at mid and high rpm’s (thats is one of the reasons why some say that it “just wants to go!”). There are few ways to sort it if it’s bothering too much, but about that later. Luckily for newer 2021 models – these already have a much better (modern) Athena ECU!

Ajp Pr7 Cold start problem

Now this problem is debatable, but… let’s be honest, everyone screamed and shouted how badly they wanted a lightweight adventure motorcycle, and Ajp delivered it and one of the weight reduction solutions was a lithium battery. Lightweight, yes very – but don’t like cold at all.  And because it tends to be a bit “sleepy” on cold mornings (and afternoons and evenings) it takes some time to start this lovely machine. There are solutions to sort that, but I assume most just learn how to live with it.

AJP PR7’s Tablet reset Problem

Now this one is a bit of a shocker for some, including me. But for a reason – not understanding how things work mainly… It’s just an android tablet! like any other tablet with installed software called “dashboard”, and if you mess things up and decide to reset it to “factory settings” and start from scratch – you will literally start from scratch -from a bare standard tablet. Now that dashboard software in the factory is installed in a way that it takes over the original tablet’s dashboard, so when switched on and off, all you see is that, but not the standard screen. It also includes settings that allow the tablet to switch on and off with power received via usb charging port. It’s not a bad thing, especially when there is no “power button” on the original case, but it can be a bit annoying, for example when riding a trail, and you stop for a minute to open a gate (in Uk we have loads of those, did i mentioned that before?), you switch off ignition, and tablets goes off too.. and when ignition is switched back on, you will have to load maps, routes and everything else like the first time…

Honest AJP PR7 owners review – Love it, Hate it, or both.

This is something I wanted to share for a while now, and I really would like to make it a positive post, and point out all  the good bits about AJP’s PR7 but I can’t help it, and I have to share a few things that might put some people off…so sorry, but here we go – i’ll be quick and straightforward about it.

  1. There is a lack of aftermarket parts for pr7.
  2. Front and Rear wheel spacers wear out very quickly.
  3. Coolant bottle design isn’t the greatest…
  4. Air filter is rather small, and
  5. Air filter box design is…should i call it “brave”?
  6. Exhaust routed in a very vulnerable position, where it is very easy to squash it.
  7. Exhaust very close to a rear brake pedal, and very limited adjustments can be made.
  8. Wiring is not the greatest and caused a number of problems, mainly the connection around the area of the throttle body.

Final thoughts about AJP PR7

Lets just say this way, if you will look online for “AJP pr7 problems” you will find loads, but, so as if you will look for any other brand or make…people tend to scream louder then they are not happy about something, rarely you will find post online saying how good that particular thing is….in any case if you look for something exciting – AJP PR7 is that bike, but keep in mind that it requires at least a little bit of know-how and DIY skills even to own one!
