Broken Tap – When You Are SIlly, But Lucky!

You know that time when you push your luck, you run out of it and then you grab by the last thread and pray for things to work out? Well… This is one of those stories!

I don’t even know why I wanted to clean those thread in the triple tree, but hey decided to do that, I went for it, and me being me – I ran out of threads to clean in that blind hole, and… well snapped it!

Yeah I know, ham-fisted I am sometimes, and that was one of those times, where I pushed unnecessarily hard to get through and failed… obviously tap snapped because it couldn’t spin / cut any more, and once it was snapped, there was no easy way to get it out…

I was lucky, or at least I thought I was lucky to have a bit of the tap sticking out, so I tried to grip on it by the pliers, but nope, it didn’t budge, even worse – I made it a bit shorted! And no surprise there!…

Next step was to employ a chisel (a tiny one) and a hammer, point it at the outer edge of the tap, just off center, and gently tap it, in hopes that that will help to spin it anticlockwise just enough…

With my luck, it got even shorter… but in the end, after a million and half taps with a hammer, it started to move and eventually loosened up just enough for me to grip it with the pliers and undo it completely…

I was impatient enough cleaning the thread and snapped the tool, but had to be patient enough to extract it… if I was patient enough straight from the beginning, I would have saved myself a headache, an hour of my time, and bloody tool! So there, a lesson – don’t be me – be patient people!
