Lets face it, whoever came up with a fuel tank design like xt660z has, must have worked for F1 before! Whoever you are, thanks for the fibreglass spoiler no one needs!
Anyway, if you ride your xt660z at motorway speeds and get a lot of buffeting / turbulence / wind (call it whatever you like it) in your face – you are not alone!
Sure, a low or weirdly shaped windscreen might not help to reduce that, but there is a very high chance that all that comes from the front part of the tank that at higher speed redirects all the wind right up and into the rider’s helmet!
Luckily there are few ways to solve it – here is my solution!
Wind buffeting – solution
It blocks the wind that used to go under the headlight and combined with a short extension – works like a dream! Stops all the wind blasting into the helmet, reducing wind noise and discomfort!
Made out of heat molding plastic sheet, that I got mine from ebay – 5mm thickness.
I do not have any drawings as i simply placed a sheet of cardboard where I wanted it to be, marked it and cut it with the scissors to the shape I thought that would work, and once I was done with the rough size of it, i traced it on the plastic, and cut it with jigsaw! Simple.
To shape it, I used a heat gun, but I’m sure holding it above the gas stove or heating up with a hair dryer would have worked just fine too. The trick is to heat up plastic slowly and gently till it softens up and becomes pliable.
Bottom part extends slightly to the back to cover a wider area and mounted with the same bolts as mudguard – above all, including tow hook. Shaped weirdly not only to close the gap but also to give a bit of room to push the rope around the hook – just in case i’ll need it.
Top bits used to be joined to one long part, however it was a bit of a joke to take things apart when needed, so eventually it got split into 2, and each side was pushed between the inner and outer layers of the covers and permanently riveted in.
Screen extension originally was much wider and uglier! To match the looks of the windscreen i just traced the shape of it onto the extension and shortened it! Also heated up the upper lip of it – to give a small curve!
Overall I was super happy with all that setup as it worked for me! Just a shame I lost the windscreen extension somewhere in Peak District!
