Storage storage storage… Like most bikes, Yamaha XT660Z Tenere has none.
And I mean, none at all!
What’s even worse, it’s hard to find a decent spot to mount a proper tool box!
After thinking and re-thinking – came up with 3 ideas:
1. Round standard size tool box on right side – for most of the tools.
2. Small storage just below the round toolkit – First aid kit.
3. Storage under seat – For spares and bigger tools.
Obviously all the brackets and fittings were hand made for each and every box, as none of it was a straight fit.
1.The round tube type of tool box was fitted on 2 existing mounts. Rear mounting point were the original exhaust used to mount on – using a small 90 degree angle bracket, and the front end – on almost like a zigzag shaped bracket mounted on the handle’s lower mount. Turned out to be a nice and solid way to mount it!
2. For the second storage I had a very special purpose, and had to be in a very accessible spot too! Couple of brackets to hold a waterproof box that is mounted on the underside of the undertray. One mounting point is share with undertray bracket, the other one is same as ECU bracket (ECU is obviously on the other side of the undertray).
3.Biggest and the most difficult one was to make the one that sits under the tray and above the rear wheel. To give you a rough idea- I simply sprayed undertray with acf50. Ratchet strapped the rear wheel as high as I could, covered the rear wheel with a bin liner, and used expanding foam to fill the gap.
Once it hardened – removed it from there, shaped it to more or less the shape I wanted it to be, and covered it all with newspaper and PVA glue! Once glue hardened – removed the foam from the inside of it and after greasing the inside of the tray – gave it a few good layers of epoxy glue and carbon fibers. Once hardened removed newspaper and pva glue and mounted it on several rivets and bolts – rock solid and decent size storage!
