Some time ago, someone told me – “buy the best helmet you can afford as it’s the single thing that will stand between you and the road…” and they were right! Shame I was told that well after my Nolan helmet has gone…
Let’s just say that we all make mistakes, now and then… and well buying Nolan n40 – was kind of mistake… let me tell you a story…
So, I was “transitioning” from sports bike stuff to adventure bike stuff, and I was very intrigued by the looks of the Nolan n40 helmet! Honestly, as soon as I saw it I fell in love with it… did a bit of research too of course – it was approved by all the relevant parties and certified (not DOT, but ECE), it even was tested with a chin bit on and off (I was led to believe, don’t quote me on that), and passed both ways (the only helmet that has passed all the testing without the chin bit at the time too! (once again, don’t quote me on that as there was absolutely nothing written about it in the documentation that came with the helmet)!
Right! The chin bit (bridge)! – so it’s one of few helmets that is so flexible: chin bit in, chin bit out, visor on or off, sun shield on or off, peak on or off! Wear it the way you like it!
Not to mention size of shield itself! Its massive!
Anyway, after wearing it for some time, I found it being very good in many ways, like the strap – rachet one, or thin chin bit (removable guard) -not restricting air allowing person to breathe freely when on the trails, good bit of kit!
Till I came off the bike…
I know I’m terrible at it (or I should I say good in falling over?), but I was riding at a walking pace, in a deep dried out rut, and lost the front end… Came off on the side that I would call now nothing more than simple “tipping over” but yet, managed to smack my head against something so badly that sear I had a light concussion (headache, feeling sick for a while)…
That event that day not only ended my days riding but definitely ended my naiveness…have you ever heard a saying “2 pounds helmet for a 2 pounds head”? No? Well, me neither… at least not till later on, but let me tell you, if you think that you can buy a good stuff, cheaply – you are in for a nasty surprise – much like I was 🙂
Only till I got a much better helmet I understood the difference the good stuff makes… and Nolan… well, that hard foam they have used inside of the helmet probably is good to keep your head in one place, not so good from keeping its content from being scrambled up! If I ever had a bigger accident, I would not like to wear that particular helmet at that time – that’s for sure!
