Normally I do not write about consumables like grease and stuff, but… I think it’s important to keep adventure motorcycles in tip top condition as adventure riding can be a bit harsh on machines that are barely designed for what we do with them! Don’t you agree?
To be honest, I haven’t checked my mighty xt’s suspension bearings in a while now, I believe around 3 years now! I know it’s embarrassing, but to my excuse, around 3 years ago I swapped all my suspension bearings, bushings, seals and used waterproof grease! I didn’t plan to check them yet either but this time, while working on my rear shock, I had no choice but to have a peak!
To my surprise, grease was still there, no horrible markings on the bushing and no sign of water or rust! 3 years of abuse on the lowest and most exposed set of bearings, and these bearings endured it all – deep mud, mucky water crossings up to the crotch – sometimes even on its side, sandy dusty lanes, rocks, grass, gravel and everything else that was thrown at it… and it’s still good!
My precious XT is gone now and I believe I need to give a Quick Update on the subject!
So to be honest, I have used the same waterproof marine grease pretty much everywhere on all my bikes for a while now, and it never disappointed me! I’m not so sure if it would be a good grease to use on wheel bearings or anything else that can get to a higher temperature, but damn that grease kept all my suspension bearings protected, and you know what, it doesn’t even have to be same brand what i’m using i suppose, for as long as it marine and waterproof – will do the trick!
