After some troubles with my old regulator rectifier, I thought I’ll get something better!
So I picked up this LUCAS 200w rectifier (240W max), with waterproof plugs! Since it’s all sealed it should give less problems than standard, as standard used to collect water inside of its plug causing problems in the long run too. At least that’s what I thought!
Swapping was easy, yellow wires soldered to yellow wires on the xt’s wiring loom, black to black, red to red! Mounting was simple too.. The Lucas regulator rectifier is a bit smaller than standard, and holes do not match, so I simply bolted it with one bolt, and then the other bolt just outside of it. Since the bracket fits nicely between regulator rectifiers fins, it sits there nice and solid there!
Went for a test ride, and came back happy as a peach as everything was finally working fine again! But, not for long…
Few weeks later, I started the bike to go to work, and halfway to work noticed that the voltmeter showed only 11volts.. And voltage dropping by 0.1v with every half a mile or so…
After inspection I noticed that my new regulator rectifiers waterproof plug started to melt inside, and my positive lead was extremely black inside of the socket!
Stripped that one off, soldered positive wires together to test it out, but left the rest connected using the same waterproof plug.. and after another short ride noticed that same thing happening again, just this time for negative wire!
Disappointed with Lucas’ choice of plugs, I cut all the waterproof plugs off and directly soldered the regulator rectifier to the wiring loom.. No plugs, no problems – a year or so have passed and I still have no troubles with it!
