Short celebrated victory after replacing my fuel pump – a whole day of running fine and covering a good few hundred miles, and this happened… stopped a mile from home, and when time came to start PR7 again – nothing!
Checked this, checked that, and once again fuel lines soft… pulled the fuel pump out, and when priming fuel just whooshes out of the fuel pressure valve. This is kind of normal for it, but first it has to let pressure to build up before releasing the excess, but mine didnt. As soon as the pump started pumping – fuel went straight out…Oh well… Took it out completely to see if i can do something about it, but nothing I could do…
Anyway, after pushing my ajp home, I thought I’ll look for something a bit more reliable I guess. Since my new fuel pump was made by company Quantum (you can read a bit more about it here), it made sense to go ahead and get a replacement fuel pressure relief valve from them too. Lifetime Warranty from Quantum is just something I can’t stop thinking about – in a good way of course!
AJP PR7 Fuel Pressure Relief valve Replacement:
Quantum QFS 43psi/300kPa Fuel Pressure Regulator HFP-PR20
It took me some time to find a direct replacement, not just by size, but also by ratings. Original Pressure relief valve is rated for 300 Kpa, and replacing it with something that has a higher rating, or lower for that matter, would mean that the injector will deliver a bit more or a bit less fuel then intended. It can mean a good thing, but since I have no “performance mods” that would require that, I’ll keep it where the factory left it – at 300Kpa.
Replacement is simple, and probably the most important thing was not to forget to place all the o-rings in the right places! And the circlip to keep the valve in it’s housing is so big, that I had no problems taking it out with a screwdriver (while on the side of the road that was).
Easy mod, and I hope I will never ever have to take that pump out ever again!
Happy riding!
